According to a filing with the Nevada Secretary of State, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, has formed a new corporation called X.AI. While the company’s goal is not stated in the form, it is suspected that this is Musk’s next venture in artificial intelligence (AI).
Elon Musk has been an outspoken critic of OpenAI, a well-known AI business, and has reportedly approached researchers about establishing a rival AI research facility. The new addition of X.AI could be part of Musk’s bigger plans to develop a “super app” dubbed X.
Furthermore, the Financial Times stated that Musk is in talks with investors of Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to help fund an AI business. Musk purchased thousands of processors from Nvidia Corp. with the new project.
Despite his AI efforts, Musk was among a group of tech sector heavyweights who advocated for developers to suspend the training of powerful AI models last month. He also attacked OpenAI, a nonprofit he helped form in 2015, and resigned from its board of directors in 2018.
Elon Musk’s new initiative could compete with OpenAI, and it remains to be seen how the startup will distinguish itself from its competition.
It’s essential emphasizing that Musk’s complaints against OpenAI revolve around its for-profit division, which he says is “effectively controlled by Microsoft.” Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI, and Musk is concerned that the group is developing AI to be “woke” rather than benefiting humanity.
Despite the controversies surrounding OpenAI, Musk was instrumental in its formation and served as a co-chair alongside current CEO Sam Altman. On the other hand, Altman has branded Musk a “jerk” on a podcast, saying that he believes Musk is concerned about humanity’s future.
Musk’s incorporation of X.AI is the latest in a string of audacious projects undertaken by the billionaire entrepreneur. Musk has been a prominent supporter of electric vehicles and clean energy, in addition to his work in AI and space exploration.
Only time will tell how X.AI will impact the AI business and how it will compare against OpenAI. However, with Musk at the helm, the business will make ripples in the IT industry in the following months and years.
Musk’s ability to turn ambitious notions into concrete products distinguishes him from other tech sector executives. His past ventures, such as Tesla’s electric automobiles and SpaceX’s reusable rockets, have succeeded enormously in their respective industries. Musk is expected to bring the same creativity and disruption to the AI business with X.AI.
It’s worth mentioning that X.AI isn’t Musk’s only AI-related endeavor right now. His other AI ventures include Neuralink, which focuses on brain-machine interfaces, and The Boring Company, which works on tunneling technologies.
Musk’s interest in AI is well-known, and he has talked openly about the dangers of AI growing too powerful. In a 2014 interview, he called AI “summoning the demon.” However, he has remarked that he believes AI can be a force for good if created responsibly.
With the inclusion of X.AI, Elon Musk appears to be taking a proactive approach to molding the future of AI. He can create AI technology that coincides with his future vision by launching a new firm. Whether X.AI will compete with OpenAI or take a different approach to AI development remains to be seen, but one thing is sure: Musk’s involvement will make waves in the AI business.
